Wisconsin facts and history plus travel and tourism information.
Wisconsin joined the United States on May 29, 1848 as the 30th state. Cold, snowy winters challenged the early settlers, some of whom burrowed holes into the hillsides, like badgers, for warmth and shelter. In present-day Wisconsin, however, the climate is prized by snowmobilers. Other popular outdoor sports include hunting and fishing.
With thousands of dairy farms, Wisconsin is the leading producer of cheese in the world. In fact, Colby cheese was first made near the town of Colby, Wisconsin. The state is also America's largest cranberry producer and a major paper products manufacturer.
Tourist attractions in Wisconsin include the House on the Rock resort, the historic Circus World Museum, and Taliesin, which embodies the architectural inspiration and designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. The scenic Wisconsin Dells area, which dubs itself "The Waterpark Capital of the World", is a popular vacation destination. Michigan and Lake Superior border Wisconsin to the north, and Lake Michigan draws visitors to Milwaukee and other lakeshore locations.
